Holy poo. You don't see a whole lot of Akira cosplay around your most widely-attended nerd conventions, probably because the franchise had its heyday before cosplay really took off, but you might be seeing that much more now that this jacket exists. It's the iconic red leather bomber worn by Kaneda in the manga and anime, complete with capsule insignia. And it's a damn sexy piece of work.
The jacket is an official piece of merchandise now offered by Bandai Visual as part of the Akira manga's 30th anniversary celebration, which has been dubbed the "A" Project. It's just the first product in what may be a bigger selection as the project unfolds. It's been meticulously designed down to the cinches, pockets, and buckles to resemble the character design in the manga and film. And if I ever see anyone wearing it I will probably follow them around forever.
Of course, neither official replicas nor high-quality leather jackets come cheap. The bomber is being sold for ¥69,800, or $900. Most manga addicts I know don't really have that kind of cash kicking around, but I'm sure there are at least a few dedicated followers of Akira that will save up for this guy. After all, it just looks so good. I'm not sure if the "A" Project will also include those red leather pants or if you'll have to supply your own to complete the ensemble. The jacket also comes in black, although that variant has a different graphic on the back that reads "2019 A.D. 28 Neo Tokyo".
