Women in Anime: More Than An Inoue Clone?

I think a huge part of how women are portrayed has to do with the genre involved.  When using characters from a shonen series, I can't think of many examples of female characters who don't fall into the stereotypes you outlined.  Most conflicts are settled with either a big fight or some other type of showdown (a big game, etc), and I can't think of many where female characters play any sort of role.  They're usually either absent or relegated to a role such as healer.  It's quite a disappointment for anyone looking for female characters that aren't a bore.
